Birding Goals for 2026

Yesterday I wrote about my goals for the coming year for the Bird Nerd Project. As with last year, these goals overlap with my birding goals, since both revolve around photographing new bird species. I photographed 170 species as part of the project. I did not track birds photographed outside of it, so my baseline for next year is 170.

My eBird totals for the year are a bit different: 204 species observed, with 123 photographed. That feels respectable, especially considering I was learning how to be a birder along the way.

Total by State

  • California: 172
  • Hawaii: 27
  • Utah: 19
  • Arizona: 10

My life list grew from 12 species to 205 after I started using eBird in May. Early on, I was not focused on photographing each species, so those early checklists reflect sightings and occasional audio confirmations. Over the last six weeks, I shifted to photographing every species I encounter, even the everyday birds. That is the plan for next year as well.

Goals for 2026

  • Photograph 300 bird species
  • Add 100 species to my life list
  • Expand my reach by visiting more states and counties. I already have firm plans for Wyoming, Idaho and Montana, with more in planning, plus at least two California road trips.
  • Plan and attend three to four Big Day birding events, and participate in local bird walks.
  • Post progress updates at least once each quarter, and monthly if the pace makes sense.

I am still working through my broader goals for 2026, which include photography, travel, writing and more. With my wife retiring, the coming year offers new freedom and opportunities. Stay tuned for updates.
