We Escaped from The Fun House!

The Fun House is a challenging escape room operated by Cross Roads Escape Games at 4245 E. La Palma Ave, Anaheim, CA. It features three immersive games: the difficult and challenging Hex Room, the scary and fun Weeping Witch, and the game we played today, The Fun House. We’ve played all three rooms and thoroughly enjoyed the high production quality and immersive experiences.

The Fun House is rated medium difficulty, with a 50% escape rate. We chose this room because it’s rated 0 out of 5 for scariness. With two kids playing alongside us, keeping things family-friendly was a priority. Having survived the terrifying Weeping Witch (which has a 4 out of 5 scariness rating), we wanted to make sure the kids enjoyed themselves, and they did!

The Fun House offers two setups: a challenging version for adults, and a lower-complexity version designed for young teens or younger children accompanied by an adult. We opted for the normal setup. The room proved challenging but fun, and fortunately, not an easy solve for our team (pictured below).

The game is nonlinear, so the entire team can stay engaged with puzzles and challenges. My usual concerns about poor lighting and difficulty spotting clues were unfounded; the room is well-lit and accessible for everyone. Although I struggled a bit with the color-based puzzles, the seven other team members easily picked up the slack.

Our team had mixed experience levels: half of us were in the 20 to 25 escape room club, while the others had only done one to three rooms. I held back a bit so the newer players could dive into the puzzles. Our youngest team member, a 10-year-old, solved a complex puzzle on his own, while the 13-year-old breezed through several challenges. I ended up playing the role of court jester, though I can’t elaborate without revealing a key game mechanic!

Like The Weeping Witch, The Fun House excels at interactive elements. We found the production value exceptional, some of the best we’ve encountered. The staff at Cross Roads are talented performers as well as excellent game masters, which we’ve consistently experienced at this venue.

We escaped with about nine minutes to spare, but honestly, we could have done it 10 or 15 minutes faster had we stuck to our usual strategy. Instead, we adopted a laid-back approach so everyone could enjoy the experience without time pressure. In the end, we were all happy with the experience. We don’t really use a formal rating scale; we either like an experience or we don’t, and we’re usually pretty harsh about poorly constructed rooms. In this case, we loved The Fun House and recommend all three rooms at Cross Roads Escape Games. You’re guaranteed a good time and great memories. No complaints at all. All in all, it was a wonderful way to celebrate my wife’s birthday.
