Top Ten Tuesday 7/22/2025

Welcome back to Top Ten Tuesdays, my weekly dive into personal favorites across music, movies, books, and more. This week, I’m highlighting a band that truly changed how I thought about music: Talking Heads.

Formed in the mid-1970s, Talking Heads blended punk, funk, art rock, and new wave into something completely unique. Their sound is eccentric yet accessible, intellectual but still full of energy, and above all, unforgettable. I’ve been a fan ever since Talking Heads: 77 dropped while I was in high school, and their music still resonates with me decades later.

My favorite album? Hands down, the iconic live album Stop Making Sense. If you haven’t seen the concert film that goes with it, do yourself a favor and find it. It’s a masterpiece.

As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts! Do any of these tracks make your list? What’s your all-time favorite Talking Heads song? Drop a note in the comments or connect with me on social.

🎧 My Top 10 Talking Heads Songs:

  1. Once in a Lifetime – Surreal, hypnotic, and existential—it’s everything great about the band in one song.
  2. This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) – Quirky and heartfelt, it’s probably their most beautiful track.
  3. Girlfriend Is Better – Funky, biting, and totally infectious (also from Stop Making Sense—watch it!).
  4. Life During Wartime – “This ain’t no party, this ain’t no disco…” An anxious anthem for chaotic times.
  5. Heaven – Stripped-down, dreamy, and haunting.
  6. Crosseyed and Painless – Rhythm-heavy and socially observant. Classic Byrne.
  7. And She Was – A catchy, oddball gem about transcendence and everyday magic.
  8. Take Me to the River – A fantastic cover with soul and swagger.
  9. Psycho Killer – Dark, theatrical, and unforgettable. One of the best debut tracks of all time.
  10. Burning Down the House – A bold, fiery banger. Turn it up and let it rip.
