Peanuts In My Pocket

As I continue experimenting with sardines and other tinned fish for protein while on Wegovy, I somehow landed on Crown Prince Kipper Snacks. I mistook them for a King Oscar product, which might explain my disappointment. The packaging looked fine, but the contents were another story; visually unappealing enough that I didn’t even bother taking a photo of the fish.

Each can lists one serving at 190 calories, slightly more than a typical tin of sardines. The can itself is larger, so perhaps it contains more oil or larger fillets. I’m not sure. I decanted the contents and discarded the remaining liquid, a mix of water and oil droplets that didn’t look appealing.

The taste and texture weren’t for me. This was my first time eating kippered herring, and it will also be my last. The flavor leaned heavily toward the fishy end of the spectrum, and the texture was off-putting. Even on a slice of sourdough toast, it failed to win me over.

I later learned that some people fry these up like bacon and serve them with eggs for breakfast, à la Supertramp. I’ll pass. Fishy bacon doesn’t sound appealing.

From a price-to-value standpoint, $3.29 seems fair. I found them online for $2.16 per can at Walmart and closer to $4 elsewhere. With enough digging, you might find a deal that doesn’t require a trip to Walmart.

Speaking of Walmart, I finally got over my Trader Joe’s phobia and went there for tinned fish, only to find they were sold out of sardines. Such is life.

A fair price for an unpleasant experience. It may be a Wegovy-friendly meal, but it’s firmly on my “nope” list.
