Natural Catch Spicy Yellowfin Tuna Filets

I picked up two tins of Natural Catch Spicy Yellowfin Tuna Filets during my first visit to Whole Foods in years. I really enjoyed them. The texture was spot on, and the spice level hit exactly where I needed it. Just enough heat to make me pause for a second, but not so much that it overwhelmed the flavor. I can handle spicy food, but I do have my limits.

These days, I tend to eat simply. I’m not sure if that’s retirement or just a growing appreciation for uncomplicated meals. A tin of spicy tuna and a few crackers works perfectly for me. I don’t need much more. I’d even consider it for breakfast instead of my usual Greek yogurt.

From the website:

INGREDIENTS: Tuna, extra virgin olive oil, water, vegetable broth, chili, paprika oleoresin, sea salt.

The tuna is presented in filet-style cuts, almost like a small steak, and marinated in Spanish extra virgin olive oil. It’s high in protein and fits well into keto or paleo diets.

I paid about $5 per tin at Whole Foods. Natural Catch lists a 12-pack for $52.80, which comes out to $4.40 each. I found them online for as low as $4.29 at Target and $4.91 on Amazon. My sweet spot for high-quality tuna is closer to $3 per tin, so this is a bit pricey. Still, it feels worth it as an occasional meal.

A quick note on Whole Foods. What the heck?

The last time I shopped there was probably 15 years ago while staying near Newbury Park for work. Back then, it felt pretentious and overpriced. Now, it comes across as a high-quality grocery store focused on fresh, premium foods. I can see the appeal, but with so many other options nearby, I’m not sure it’s worth going out of my way.

Would I buy it again?

Yes. In fact, I plan to buy a case when it goes on sale. I’ll mix it in with my other tinned fish options once a week or so going forward.
