Democrat Derek Tran ran for Congress representing California’s 45th district. He was a tireless campaigner, consistently present through YouTube ads, mailers, and door-to-door visits. I felt he ran an effective campaign, yet he ultimately lost to incumbent Republican Michelle Steel by more than 13,000 votes. I spent this morning reflecting on why that happened.

Tran was a strong candidate with an inspiring background. As a veteran, attorney, and local business owner, his profile was appealing. His political positions were moderate, leaning toward progressive. I appreciated his stance on issues such as abortion, education, and healthcare. He seemed to touch on all the right notes, and I believed he had a real chance at winning.
Throughout the campaign, I received no fewer than six in-person visits and numerous texts and emails urging me to support him. He was active, likable, and highly present. Yet, Michelle Steel prevailed.
Steel, of course, had the advantage of incumbency, which ensured a base of dedicated Republican voters. Despite this, I thought Tran’s message would resonate with Orange County residents. However, Steel’s message ultimately proved more persuasive. I have a theory as to why.
I was inundated with negative and often misleading messaging about Tran. His opponents depicted him as a questionable lawyer defending unsavory individuals. While I assumed these accusations were false, I did little to counteract them. I also didn’t see significant rebuttals from Tran’s campaign. Instead, the campaign noise was dominated by Steel’s MAGA stances, especially her hardline position on abortion.
I once had a voice that I used effectively to support causes and amplify messages. I could have done so here. Tran needed vocal advocates willing to challenge the falsehoods. He needed active supporters to call out the lies. I could have contributed more, and collectively, we could have made a greater effort. I didn’t even put up a yard sign.
Now, it’s time to gather the resources and resolve needed for the next battle. I may be just one voice, but I am committed. Whoever steps up next will have my full support. I’m sorry, Derek—I let you down.
