A friend suggested that I start reviewing some of the foods I’ve been eating on my Wegovy-inspired, high-protein diet. I’ve been eating a lot of sardines lately, so it made sense to start with tinned fish; something I never thought I’d enjoy as much as I do.
I picked up a can of Fishwife Sardines with Hot Pepper from World Market for $8.99. It’s a pricey can of fish, no doubt. Was it worth it? Maybe.

Taste and texture were spot-on. The sardines smelled fresh and tasted even better. They weren’t fishy at all, and the flesh was firm. The heat level landed just below my threshold for capsaicin-induced pain, enough to make my lips tingle with every bite. I loved it. I ate the whole tin with a few crackers and needed nothing else to feel satisfied.
From a price-to-value standpoint, these sardines are a luxury item. They cost roughly 2.6 times more than my usual brand. Checking online, I found the price consistent across retailers, about $32 for a three-pack, or $28 if you subscribe on Amazon. As a pensioner, that’s a hard price to justify for a pantry staple.
What would I pay? Five dollars a can feels right. I’d buy them again in a heartbeat at that price. Until then, I’ll keep an eye out for sales or bundle discounts.
